Science in Sport are one of the leading companies in sports nutrition and have an amazing catalogue of products that are designed to help athletes go further and fast for longer. So with this in mind, we thought we'd give the Science in Sport GO Energy + Electrolyte Gels a test during a winter weekend ride.
The Science
The SiS GO Energy + Electrolyte Gels are designed to still provide a carbohydrate energy boost but in addition, work in a similar way to Electrolyte hydration drinks. This is by quickly restoring key minerals including sodium, potassium and magnesium that are lost in sweat during endurance and intensive exercise. Electrolytes also help to maintain the bodies fluid balance when re-hydrating during exercise. Each 60ml gel gives 22grams of carbohydrates.
Are they any good?
Good question! The simple answer is yes - I found the Science in Sport GO Energy + Electrolyte Gels to be impressive in performance. Science in Sport recommend you only consume 1 of these gels, along with fluid and Isotonic gels or energy bar per 60 minutes. They are easy to open and the Raspberry flavour the we tested (also available in lemon & lime) - actually tasted pretty good. I tested the gels on about a 50 mile ride at steady pace and found them to be fast working at boosting energy levels. SiS gels do tend to be a bit thicker in consistency than some brands but are still easy to digest.

There are a whole host of gels and other nutritional products on the market and finding the right ones for you can take some testing. However, having a gel that not only provides a good level of carbohydrate energy (22grams) but is also designed to restore electrolyte levels is great. The gels are fast working and despite the limited choice of 2 flavours - taste good. Unlike some gels I found them to be easy to digest and 'kind on the stomach'. Price-wise, you can buy these gels as a box of 30 (rrp £44.99) or a box of 6 (rrp £8.99). At the time of this review however, Wiggle, Chain Reaction Cycles and Evans Cycles all have the gels on offer.
