Socks are designed in the UK and manufactured in Italy. I have been riding in the PONGO Climber cycling socks to see if they are as good as they look.
The Technology
The PONGO Climber cycling socks are part of the company's Define Collection. They are a lightweight summer sock that are constructed with an intricate woven mesh. This tight mesh pattern helps to keep the foot cool when riding, whilst the high needle count is designed to increases the durability of the socks. The mid section of the foot has an 'anti-twist' band. This provides supports around the foot arch and adds a good level of compression. Sizing is available in two options - S/M (38-42) or L/XL (43-46).

I'm a bit particular about choosing cycling sock. I have always been a fan of ankle or low cut socks. According to the PONGO 'Style Guide' on the company's website, these are classed as 'the tennis player'. But the 6 inch cuff on the climber socks I tested turned out to be surprisingly comfortable. At first glance they seemed like they would be too small. Putting the socks over my hand to test the elasticity - there seemed to only be a small amount of stretch. They are quite narrow around the top and needed a bit of stretching to put on. But once your foot is in and the socks are pulled up the sizing (L/XL) proved more than adequate. You begin to appreciate the thought in the design once riding in them. The mesh uppers are extremely comfortable. Although I can see plucking the threads could become an issue with rouge finger, toe or hangnails - so be careful when putting on and taking off.
I tested the socks over a number of commutes and weekend rides, up to about 75km. The socks held in place brilliantly. The upper cuff hugged the legs tight enough to stay up without restricting circulation. The woven mesh panels also did their part in supporting the foot and ankle. An area I sometimes have issues with when it comes to cycling socks is the sole and foot arch. I often find too much cushioning and not enough support. The PONGO Climber cycling socks have a good balance of both and my feet remained comfortable over the duration of the ride(s). As I mentioned earlier, the PONGO Climber cycling sock is designed to be a lightweight summer sock. This means the are very breathable and definitely more suited to temperatures in the upper teens or above.

Designer cycling socks with bold and elaborate patterns are becoming more and more popular. The thing I like about these socks is they've been kept simple. The socks are beautifully designed, well constructed - and based on the PONGO Climber cycling socks I tested, do exactly what a good pair of cycling socks should. I am mindful that the mesh could be prone to plucking. But a little care should prevent this. Pricing is a little higher than some may be prepared to pay for cycling socks at £22.50 per pair - but the price is reflecting in the quality.
